The picture above and the two below show how rails are shipped these days. This train was 36 cars long with the rails stretching from just behind the locomotive to the end of the train, nearly a third of a mile. The picture below right is a picture between cars.

Axle counter and temperature transmitter. After a train has passed, a voice synthesized message is sent to the engineer giving him the number of wheel axles and the highest temperature measured on his train. This gives the engineer a health check on his train.

Welding rails together in Michigan. Trains can go faster on welded rails, with less clickity-clack too.
